New Passing Criteria – CPT, IPCC, Final (What if it was true?)

Recently the following news was rumored on the Internet (ICAI has already clarified that this is not true and there is no change in the passing criteria…..what we have done is only a what if analysis)

“ICAI has changed the passing criteria for CA CPT, IPCC & Final

Passing criteria at all level of the CA examination i.e. CPT, IPC and Final has been changed to 55% marks in aggregate and 45% for individual subjects w.e.f. May, 2015 Examinations.”

ICAI issued following notification for announcing that this is not true

Let us assume for a minute that it was true, then how will it effect the results & placements

Existing Passing Criteria

CA CPT – 30% in individual subjects and 50 % aggregate

A IPC & Final – 40% in individual subjects and 50% in aggregate

How is this change going to affect

  • Individual passing % in CPT will be increased from 30% to 45% and aggregate form 50% to 55%. This should result in bringing down the overall result of CPT which has been quite high since the beginning at close to 30%. See this post for passing trends in past 6 attempts.
  • One major impact of fall in result will be the reduction in no. of students finally passing the CA examination. This in turn may prove helpful in increasing the placement % which has seen a huge fall in in recent placement programs. See this post on analysis of CA placements in last 5 years. ICAI has been struggling in trying to increase the placement % but this has not proved useful yet.
